In Santa Clara, California, the San Francisco 49ers took to the field for practice following what was described as their most grueling session of training camp yet. Despite the intense workout, the team enjoyed a lighter, cooler session on Saturday. Quarterback Brock Purdy, however, continued to impress and heat up on the field.
After showcasing his skills with a perfect back-shoulder touchdown throw to receiver Jauan Jennings during Saturday’s practice, Purdy had an impressive showing on Sunday. Out of the three incompletions, two were due to dropped passes on otherwise excellent throws. Despite missing two of their top targets, Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel, the 49ers’ pass offense found a nice rhythm during practice.
Purdy commented on the absence of his top targets, stating, “(Missing those two) makes me play quarterback really efficiently. When they’re on the field, my antenna’s up. If I do get this look, I’m more likely to throw to Aiyuk or Deebo. So a day like this was good for me to go through all my reads.”
The quarterback also praised the veteran mindset of receiver Chris Conley, noting, “He has that veteran mindset — he’s smart. He knows the details of our offense. Chris has that older veteran-ness to him.”
Purdy highlighted the importance of building timing and rapport with his receivers, citing the need for acclimation with new additions to the team like rookie wideout Ricky Pearsall. Despite challenges, Purdy emphasized the importance of pushing himself to be uncomfortable and to maintain a sense of urgency on the field.
The 49ers were without several key players during practice, including Deebo Samuel, Malik Turner, Jacob Cowing, Tay Martin, and others. Despite the absences, the team continues to work towards building chemistry and preparing for the upcoming season.
