In a rainy preseason opener, head coach Brian Daboll showcased his multitasking abilities as he took on the added responsibility of offensive play-calling for the New York Giants. Despite occasionally turning his back to the field to focus on the defensive side of the game, Daboll was impressed with the coaching staff’s communication and operation during the game.
“The coaches did a great job,” Daboll remarked. “Mike had a lot of good thoughts tonight. But the communication, that’s good. I was happy with the communication from the staff.”
Throughout the game, Daboll utilized a clipboard tent to protect his play sheet from the rain. Focused and intense, he called plays for the offense, frequently referring to his sheet for the next play option. Daboll’s strategic positioning on the sideline allowed him to closely monitor the game while pacing back and forth.
After each offensive series, Daboll would offer quick feedback to the quarterbacks before engaging in a more in-depth meeting with them, quarterbacks coach Shea Tierney, and his son Christian, who served as an offensive assistant. These post-series discussions were crucial for evaluating performances and making necessary adjustments.
However, not everything went smoothly on the field. In a moment of miscommunication between quarterback DeVito and wide receiver Allen Robinson, a pass along the sideline fell incomplete. Daboll, visibly disappointed, quickly moved on to the next play.
Overall, Daboll’s debut as the play-calling head coach was a success, with his meticulous attention to detail and hands-on approach guiding the Giants to a 14-3 victory over the Lions in the preseason opener.
