In a picturesque scene at Flowery Branch, Ga., a blossoming camaraderie between Atlanta Falcons safety Jessie Bates III and quarterback Kirk Cousins has been brewing since their initial interaction. What began as casual on-field compliments and acknowledgments quickly evolved into deep, one-on-one discussions that transcended mere player-coach dynamics.
“We just always talk on the field when we are out there, like, ‘Hey, Jess, that was a good break,’ or, ‘Kirk, that was a good look off,’ and it just kind of developed with those conversations,” Bates revealed about their early interactions.
As the Falcons’ top free-agency acquisition last year, Bates found a kindred spirit in Cousins when the veteran signal-caller joined the team this offseason. Their shared cerebral approach to the game caught the attention of Falcons quarterbacks coach T.J. Yates, who marveled at their instant connection.
“Soon as the play was done they’d go over to the side like, ‘What were you doing here?’ That’s just high-level leadership. They are both about making each other better to make the team better,” Yates observed.
For Bates, these one-on-one film sessions with a quarterback are a novel experience in his seventh professional season, having recently earned his first Pro Bowl nod. In contrast, Cousins, a seasoned 12-year veteran and four-time Pro Bowler, has engaged in similar film study sessions in the past but emphasizes their value.
“He’s seen it all,” Bates remarked about Cousins. “There’s a lot of the game that he can pass along, and he’s willing to do that. He’s one of the top quarterbacks in this league, and it’s not by mistake. I’ve watched how he works day in and day out.”
The mutual learning and mentorship between the two players have not gone unnoticed, as Bates acknowledges the impact it has made on his game and his role within the Falcons’ defense.
“That time has been very helpful,” Bates admitted. “I can also pass that along to any of the other guys in our defense. Kirk, his value as a person here is going to be huge.”
