In the high stakes world of NFL football, agents are the unsung heroes working behind the scenes, supporting their clients and navigating the complex world of league transactions. They are the ones with their finger on the pulse of both the present and future of the league, influencing decisions that impact players’ careers and the league as a whole.
Recently, The Athletic had the opportunity to speak with 31 NFL agents for their sixth annual agent survey. This diverse group, made up of both seasoned veterans and newcomers, represents some of the biggest names in the league – from All-Pro selections to franchise quarterbacks to promising rookies. They are the ones guiding players through the often murky waters of the NFL, and now they are sharing their insights with the public on a range of important topics.
The agents, who were granted anonymity to protect themselves and their clients, weighed in this summer on a variety of issues, from Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys’ offseason to the rising salaries of wide receivers. They also delved into topics like general managers with a knack for spotting talent, the quarterback situation in Atlanta, Patrick Mahomes’ record-breaking contract, and ways to improve the league as a whole.
When it comes to organizations, the agents had a lot to say. One agent praised the San Francisco 49ers for their winning culture and ability to retain top talent despite constant poaching from other teams. Another highlighted the Philadelphia Eagles for their consistency in both rewarding players and drafting successfully. And yet another agent singled out the Green Bay Packers for their well-run front office and ability to rebuild the team without sacrificing the future.
Speaking of quarterbacks, the agents had thoughts on that too. The Pittsburgh Steelers were praised for their traditional, no-nonsense approach to the game, while the Carolina Panthers were criticized for their lack of stability in the front office. Despite some missteps, however, most agents agreed that NFL organizations are generally competent, with only a few exceptions.
Overall, NFL agents play a crucial role in shaping the league, working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that their clients succeed on and off the field. And as the NFL continues to evolve, these agents will be right there, guiding players through the ever-changing landscape of professional football.
