In a stunning turn of events, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has officially named Russell Wilson as the team’s starting quarterback, solidifying Wilson’s position as the man under center for the upcoming season. After previously declaring Wilson as being in the “pole position” to be the starter, Tomlin made the decision final on Wednesday, much to the delight of Steelers fans everywhere.
This will mark Wilson’s third team as a starting quarterback, with his impressive resume already including ten seasons as the Seattle Seahawks’ signal-caller. Despite his success in Seattle, Wilson was traded to the Denver Broncos in 2022, where he endured two disappointing seasons before being let go with a massive $85 million dead cap hit.
Upon his arrival in Pittsburgh, Wilson faced stiff competition from up-and-coming quarterback Justin Fields during training camp and the preseason. However, Tomlin ultimately decided to go with experience, selecting the seasoned veteran over the young talent.
“We all just try to be our best every day. Every day I step in the building, I try to bring my energy, bring focus, detail and experience of it all, too,” Wilson expressed to reporters on Wednesday. “When you step in between the white lines, you do everything you can to be the best version of you.”
With a career boasting 43,653 passing yards, 334 touchdowns, and 106 interceptions in 188 regular-season games, Wilson’s talent and leadership will undoubtedly be a valuable asset to the Steelers. His career passer rating of 100 only solidifies his status as one of the game’s elite quarterbacks.
Wilson himself praised the Steelers’ new offensive coordinator, Arthur Smith, for his football acumen and vision for the team’s offense. “Arthur has been great. His knowledge of the game, how we want to run the ball and play action and how we want to get the ball out quick,” Wilson commended. “I just think he’s got a tremendous mind. I’m really looking forward to this season.”
As the Steelers prepare to embark on a new era with Wilson at the helm, fans can expect an exciting season full of promise and potential with their new starting quarterback leading the charge.
