Russell Wilson still vividly recalls the pivotal phone call that changed the course of his career on April 27, 2012. The Seattle Seahawks had just inked Matt Flynn to a three-year deal to stabilize the quarterback position, but everything shifted when they decided to take a chance on an undersized passer from Wisconsin in the third round.
“Pete (Carroll) called me when I got drafted, and said, ‘Go ahead and go for this thing,'” Wilson reminisced. “I said, ‘Coach, I don’t know any other way.'”
As a rookie, Wilson faced skepticism about his abilities due to his height and background. “Everybody told me I was too short and couldn’t do it,” he reflected.
Fast forward twelve years and Wilson found himself in another career-altering situation, this time receiving a recruiting pitch from Steelers defensive lineman Cameron Heyward.
“It’s different from college, because I didn’t have to worry about NIL,” Heyward quipped. “Leadership. He’s already won a Super Bowl and can provide knowledge there, but then also someone who’s also hungry chasing another one.”
After being traded to the Broncos, Wilson expressed his desire to play for another decade or so and win multiple Super Bowls. This change of scenery was seen as a new chapter in his quest to solidify his legacy, hopefully ending in a Hall of Fame induction in Canton.
Wilson attributed his struggles in the 2022 season to a partially torn lat muscle in his throwing shoulder, resulting in career lows in completion percentage and passer rating. Known for his ability to create plays on the move, Wilson’s mobility has declined with age, leading to a league-high number of sacks over the last two seasons.
Despite being a top-tier quarterback not long ago, Wilson’s reputation has taken a hit in recent years. Once ranked alongside Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers, Wilson slipped in the rankings following a rough 2022 season. Even with improvement in 2023, Wilson fell further, nearing Tier 4 in a poll of NFL coaches and executives.
