The Dallas Cowboys found themselves embroiled in controversy as defensive tackle Albert Huggins made headlines for all the wrong reasons during a joint practice session with the Los Angeles Rams. Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy wasted no time in addressing the situation, coming down hard on Huggins for his unacceptable behavior.
“Obviously, his behavior is unacceptable,” McCarthy remarked, as reported by ESPN.com. “It’s something that’s been addressed. He has apologized and I’m comfortable with his apology. I was obviously on the offensive side of the field when it happened. I had a chance to talk to (Cowboys defensive coordinator) Mike Zimmer and (Rams coach) Sean McVay.”
The incident unfolded during Wednesday’s practice when the Dallas defensive line went head-to-head with the Los Angeles offensive line in drills. A clip of the incident, circulating on social media, captured Huggins shedding a Rams lineman during a simulated pass rushing drill. But it was what happened next that drew all the attention – Huggins aggressively shoved a Rams staffer to the ground as he made his way down the field.
As Rams players quickly converged on the scene, Huggins nonchalantly trotted away. However, he was promptly pulled from the practice by Cowboys coaches, who wasted no time in admonishing the 27-year-old defensive tackle for his actions.
Huggins, who is vying for a backup spot on the interior of the defensive line, is no stranger to the NFL. Having played for five different teams in as many seasons, he most recently suited up for the Falcons last season. With 22 tackles, two quarterback hits, and one fumble recovery to his name, Huggins brings experience to the Cowboys’ defensive line.
The Cowboys took a chance on Huggins, signing him on August 6 in the hopes that he could bolster their defensive front. However, his recent behavior has undoubtedly caused some concern within the organization.
In the fast-paced world of American football, tempers can flare and emotions can run high, but there is no excuse for crossing the line as Huggins did. As the Cowboys look to bounce back from this incident, it remains to be seen how Huggins will respond and whether he can earn back the trust of his teammates and coaches.
