After a long and drawn-out contract negotiation, Haason Reddick and the New York Jets have finally come to an agreement. The stalemate has come to an end, with Reddick set to report to the team on Monday after reaching a deal on an adjusted contract. An anonymous source familiar with the situation revealed to USA TODAY Sports that the Jets will waive over $12 million in fines that Reddick had accumulated during his six-month holdout following his trade from the Philadelphia Eagles.
Reddick’s re-worked contract will now run through 2024, with both the Jets and the edge rusher committed to working towards a new long-term extension. The saga began when the Jets acquired Reddick in a trade with the Eagles back in March, after contract negotiations with Philadelphia hit a roadblock. Unfortunately for Reddick, a long-term deal was never reached after his move to New York. This led to the two-time Pro Bowler skipping the Jets’ entire offseason program, including mandatory minicamp, and failing to report to training camp.
In August, Reddick requested a trade but the Jets decided to hold onto their new acquisition, declining to part ways with him. Now, finally, it seems that the fences have been mended between the player and the team.
Reddick’s return couldn’t come at a better time for the Jets, who are looking to turn around their sluggish start to the season. With the recent trade for star wide receiver Davante Adams to reunite him with former teammate Aaron Rodgers, the Jets are hoping to inject some much-needed firepower into their offense.
On the defensive side of the ball, Reddick’s presence will be a significant boost for a Jets team that has already shown promise in the pass rush department. With 20 sacks on the season, tied for third in the NFL, Reddick’s return will help alleviate the loss of Jermaine Johnson, who suffered a season-ending torn Achilles. As the Jets gear up for the second half of the season, Reddick’s contributions are sure to be pivotal in their quest for success.
