With less than a month to go until NFL Week 1 kicks off, the bets are pouring in at sportsbooks across the nation. The Kansas City Chiefs may have the most-bet team by handle at BetMGM Sportsbook to win the AFC West, but I’m looking beyond the favorites to find some undervalued gems as we head into the new season.
One of my top picks for an unexpected division winner is the New Orleans Saints to take the NFC South crown. In the past 21 seasons, there has been at least one team that has gone from worst to first in their division, defying expectations. Last year, it was the Houston Texans who made the leap, and before them, it was the Cincinnati Bengals who shocked everyone by winning the AFC North.
The Bengals, in particular, have a favorable strength of schedule (SOS) this year compared to last year, which bodes well for their chances in a competitive AFC North. Despite Joe Burrow’s season-ending wrist injury and struggles early in the season, the Bengals have made some key additions to their defense, including Sheldon Rankins and draft picks Kris Jenkins and McKinnley Jackson.
The return of safety Vonn Bell and the signing of Geno Stone also bolster the Bengals’ defense, while the departure of defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald from the Ravens could impact their scheming tactics. With Burrow expected to be healthy and ready to lead the Bengals, they have a real shot at reclaiming the top spot in the AFC North.
So as we gear up for the new NFL season, keep an eye on the underdogs who have the potential to surprise everyone and come out on top in their divisions. It’s anyone’s game in the NFL, and this year is shaping up to be full of unexpected twists and turns. Get ready for an exciting season of football ahead!
